Organic cotton and muslin are easy to care for, and a few simple habits keep them soft and help them last through a lot of washes.
Wash before first wear
A first wash removes any finishing from manufacturing and softens the fabric. Muslin crinkles and may shrink slightly: that’s normal and part of its charm.
Cold and gentle
Use a cold, gentle cycle with similar colours, and turn printed pieces inside out. Cold water is kinder to the fibres and to your power bill.
Choosing a detergent
A mild, fragrance-free detergent is a good choice for babies’ skin. Skip fabric softener on muslins, washcloths and towels: it coats the fibres and makes them less absorbent. Avoid bleach, which weakens cotton.
Stains
Rinse milk and food stains in cold water as soon as you can, then soak before washing. Hot water can set protein stains. Drying in sunlight can help fade some marks, but keep coloured pieces in the shade to protect the colour.
Drying and storing
Line dry in the shade where possible. Store clean, dry clothes folded in a cool place, and wash outgrown pieces before packing them away.
